Llanhilleth Miners Institute

Built in 1906 and now a grade 2 listed building, the Llanhilleth miners institute stands as a testimonial of what can be done if you put your mind to it.

The miners at Llanhilleth Colliery recognised the need for both themselves, and their families, to be able to access healthcare, whilst also wanting to combine both their recreational and educational needs.

Initially a small building was provided by a Mr Edward Jones, before another idea was put forward, and the building that stands today remains a tribute to the miners, and their vision of a better life.

When you step inside, there is the sense of being welcome, but also, being closely watched and monitored by whoever walks the corridors.

Staff and visitors have regularly reported the sensation of being followed throughout the building, often afraid to turn around, in case they catch a glimpse of ..who it is.

Knocking has been heard, maybe to get attention. Perhaps they just want people to know they are there, still taking care of the building. Footsteps are regularly heard throughout, pacing through seemingly empty corridors and disembodied voices have been heard, with conversations echoing from times passed.

A man has been seen many times, giving the viewer a quick glance, before dissipating back into the shadows. A lady has been seen and heard on the lower floor. Did she use the institute as one of the 900 members? or is she a former member of staff, still carrying out her work duties, long after her shift was over? There is also a child that made themselves known on the team visit. Is it this child that likes to tease the lady that cleans the building? It's up to you along with the team to find out.
