About the event
Nestled in the Welsh valleys and in the shadow of the mountain it was named after, sits an inn that
lays claim to being the oldest in Wales.
With its roaring open fire, original features and warm welcome, it is easy to get swept up in the
village pub atmosphere, but when the lights go out, and the patrons have gone home, the Skirrid inn
comes ‘alive’.
The first floor of the inn was used as a courtroom where felons that had committed crimes would be
tried. It is well known how harsh the judges presiding were, and as a result some paid their debt to
society with the help of the hangman’s noose. It is thought that a total of 182 criminals were hanged
from an oak beam over the staircase.
The Skirrid Inn claims to have several ghosts or spirits in residence, with the more well-known being
that of Fanny Price. Fanny was an 18th century landlady who died in 1873 of consumption. Buried in the local
churchyard alongside her family members, Fanny still walks throughout
the inn, long after her time was called. People report hearing the rustling of a lady’s skirts as she
walks past, and the strong smell of lavender, possibly her perfume, announces her presence. A
gentle soul, intrigued with the comings and goings of many a ghost hunter, she has interacted with
us on previous investigations.
The previous landlord saw the figure of a man in a tricorn hat, silently observing him, before fading away, and
the spirit of Father Henry Vaughan walks throughout the bar area, quietly blessing the pub and all
that enter it.
As you move to the upper floors, the atmosphere takes a more sinister turn, and it is on the stairs
that people have reported the feeling of a tightness around their throats. A malevolent spirit lingers
on the staircase, heavy footsteps have been reported on many occasions ascending the steps, along
with a shadow that has been seen blocking the light beneath bedroom doors, but on inspection, no
one is there.
A little girl has been seen upstairs, along with a cat, but the spirit you must be most wary of, is the
man that resides in room 1.
This spirit is angry, does not like visitors and is not afraid to make people aware of this. On previous
investigations, this man has been seen and heard, and he has left guests in tears, with some leaving
the room and refusing to go back.
With shadows, the feeling of being watched, footsteps, people touched and pushed, objects moving,
doors slamming, equipment triggered and more ….
